DI MAX     New For 2009                                           Read user experiences here.

Our New DI MAX is the most versatile instrument pre-amp on the market. With 2 independent channels, the DI MAX can be used as a blender as well as a pre-amp. The Channel-1 input will accept ¼” mono as well as ¼” stereo (TRS) inputs which allows the DI MAX to process the “tip” signal through the Channel-1 controls and the “ring” signal through the Channel-2 controls giving you an enormous amount of flexibility for creative signal blending from your stereo pickups. Of course you can plug 2 different instruments into the DI MAX and blend the signals. Channel-1 also allows the use of an XLR input so you can use the DI MAX as a personal mic pre-amp.

The DI MAX lets you dial in a clear, natural sound and route it to a stage PA from a balanced XLR output. A ¼” Line out sends the signal to your stage amp. Tone controls include active bass and treble EQ, mid-dip shape control, and phase switch. Operates on 48V phantom power, 9V adapter, or 9V battery.

ULTRASOUND DI MAX Features:

• Full-featured stereo preamp and DI box
• “Bulletproof” metal housing
• Input gain control for each channel to allow proper setting for the huge variety of
   acoustic pickup output levels
• Balanced XLR output for routing the signal to a PA system
• 1/4” Line Out for sending the signal to a stage amp
• Both stage and PA outputs have their own level controls
• 48V phantom power capability
• Active bass and treble EQ for each channel
• Mid-dip shape for each channel control permits removal of honky
• Phase switch for each channel to help eliminate feedback

I recently purchased your brand new DI Max preamp. This is a terrific product.

I had been using a Fishman Aura Dreadnought Pedal and a Baggs ParaDI in combination with the DS4 to get the tone I wanted from my guitar.  I was satisfied with this arrangement and bought the DI Max to address a different issue .  Out of curiosity I tried it in lieu of the Aura and ParaDI.

The result was a revelation; a warm and extremely clear acoustic sound that blew the doors off the other combo.  This is a brilliant little box. (Oh, it also completely cured the problem I was having interfacing with our church's PA, which was a primary reason for getting it in the first place.)

Thanks very much.

Question:

What is the lowest bass frequency the DI Max can handle?

I see in my operating guide that the active Bass control affects frequencies in the 150 Hz range. Does that mean that the lowest frequency is 150 Hz?

Does the Shape control change (lower) the 150 Hz level?

I am using the DI Max for my upright bass where the open e string is around 41 Hz. Does that mean the DI Max chops off the frequencies between 41 and 150 Hz?

If it does, is the difference audible?

I have used the DI Max at two outdoor concerts so far. I am blending two piezo pickups. I do not put the signal through an amp. I prefer to go direct to the PA. In both cases the sound techs have commented on how good the bass sounds, but I am wondering if the DI Max is limiting what my upright bass can do at the bottom end?

Other than this, I find the DI Max is easy to use and operate and it’s very clean.

I would appreciate any comments.

Thanks.

Answer:

Hi Martin,

The DI MAX will pass frequencies below 20Hz. The Bass "control" will cut and boost the signal in the 150 Hz range but the unit will pass frequencies well below that.

I have a number of players who use our DI's with upright bass and they all rave about the tone. It will not limit the bottom end frequencies.

Thanks for the inquiry.

Thanks a million for the information.

I shoulda just listened to what the sound guys told me!

What I like about the DI Max is that it is just as clean as my Baggs ParaAcoustic DI but much cleaner than the Fishman Platinum Pro Bass EQ. But the two channel input feature is what sold me. It's a very good product at a good price.
